It is a model WRT54G model version 5. I tried a powercylce many times to stop the blinking light but that doesn't work so I think the problem is a result of something else. The problem started after the Comcast phone/internet modem was installed by one of their "professionals" don't know if that means anything or has anything to do with it but ever since then it hasn't worked.

This is caused by the fact that firmware is not loading correctly. The process must be done on a computer plugged into the router directly.
You first need to establish a connection to the Internet and download firmware for your router.
