How do I configure an HP Jetadmin 3.x HP Jetdirect port on a Windows network?

ANSWER : Follow the steps below. If the HP Jetdirect print server and Jetdirect Port needs to be reconfigured, reset the HP Jetdirect to factory defaults and delete the existing HP Jetdirect Port from the printer Properties. Most internal HP Jetdirect print servers can be reset by tuning off the printer and then holding down the GO or ONLINE button while turning on the printer. Most HP Jetdirect external print servers can be reset by disconnecting the power cord then holding down the Test button for five seconds while plugging in the power cord.

Configure a printer using HP Jetdirect Port Easy Setup

1. Use one of two methods:
a. Select Start, Programs, HP Jetadmin Utilities, and Add HP Jetdirect Printer to run the Add HP Jetdirect Printer Wizard.
b. If the printer and HP Jetdirect software is already installed, select Start, Settings, and Printers. Open the Properties of the printer and select the Ports tab, then select Add Port. Highlight HP Jetdirect Port, then select New Port.
2. Select Easy Setup and Next.
3. Select IPX/SPX Printer from the Protocols option; then select Printer List.
4. Select the Name and LAN Hardware Address of the HP Jetdirect print server that is to be configured. The LAN Hardware address is found on the printer's or HP Jetdirect's Configuration page. If the device is not present in the Printer List, select Refresh List.
5. Select OK.
6. Select Next without making any changes.
7. If an ExPlus 3 or 500X has been selected, a screen will prompt for the correct port number. Select the correct port number; then select Next.
8. Click OK on the Successfully Created Port message.
9. The Add Printer Wizard will launch to finish the driver installation.
Configure a printer using HP Jetdirect Port Custom Setup

Custom Setup is needed in order to specify the port name or to perform Advanced Discovery searches.

Open the Properties of the printer and select the Ports tab, then Add Port. Highlight HP Jetdirect Port, then select New Port.
2. Select Custom Setup and Next.
3. Select IPX/SPX Printer from the Protocols option and Printer List.
Type the port name and select Next.
8. Enter a port name. The default IPX node name will appear and can be used, if desired. Select Next.

Troubleshooting tips
1. If the printer could not be found on the network, or if configuration or communication errors occur when trying to create an HP Jetdirect Port, try the following:
a. In the Add Port Wizard, select IPX/SPX Printer from the Protocols option; then select Printer List. Select Rebuild List. Select the printer name and continue.
b. Check for errors on the printer's or HP Jetdirect's Self-Test page. Errors could indicate a connection problem or a disabled protocol.
c. Verify that an HP Jetdirect port has not already been created. An HP Jetdirect port can only be created once for each HP Jetdirect device. Check the port names in the Printer Properties under the Ports tab. If there are any port names ending with "(HP Jetdirect)", highlight the port, click Configure Port, and check the LAN Hardware address. If it matches the LAN Hardware address in the Self-Test page then this HP Jetdirect port has already been created. Delete the port.
d. Instead of selecting Printer List in the Add Port Wizard, manually enter the Network Printer Name and the LAN hardware address. The Network Printer Name and the LAN hardware address can be found on the Self-Test page of the printer or the HP Jetdirect device. The Network Printer Name is listed as Node Name, and the LAN hardware address is listed as LAN HW Address. Select Next.
2. If you are unable to print:
 Check for errors on the printer or on the HP Jetdirect Self-Test page. Errors could indicate a connection problem or a disabled protocol.
 Send a test page from HP Jetadmin. If this prints, it helps to verify the network connection.
 Use a different print driver. If this prints, there is probably an issue with the particular print driver.
 Use a different protocol, either DLC or TCP/IP. If this works, there may be an issue with the protocol, or with the protocol on the particular PC trying to print.
