Computer Browser service maintains an updated list of computers on the network and supplies this list to computers on the network and supplies this list to computers designated as browsers. If this service is stopped, this list will not be updated or maintained.
This problem may occur if any or all of the following conditions are true:
A. Computer Browser service is disabled in the current hardware profile.
B. The dependency services are stopped - Server service, Workstation service
C. Incorrect registry entry.
D. Corrupt or missing files.
1. svchost.exe - located in %systemroot%\system32
2. browser.dll - located in %systemroot%\system32
A. Verify that the Computer Browser service is not disabled in current hardware profile.
1. Click Start > Run, type services.msc and press ENTER.
2. Locate and double click Computer Browser service to view its properties.
3. Under Log On tab, enable the service under the current profile if it is disabled.
4. Click General tab and select Automatic under Startup type list.
5. Start the service by clicking the Start button.
6. Click OK.
B. Verify that the dependency services are started - Server service, Workstation service
1. Click Start > Run, type services.msc and press ENTER.
2. Locate and double click Server service to view its properties.
3. Select Automatic under Startup type list and click Apply.
4. Click the Start button to start the service, and then click OK.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for Wokstation service.
C. Modify registry [Windows XP only].
Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor. MaxSP recommends that you create a backup of the current registry before making changes.
1. Click Start > Run, type regedit.exe and press ENTER.
2. Go to the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters
3. Verify that the following registry entry exists:
value: Servicedll
type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
data: %systemroot%\system32\browser.dll
4. Exit Registry Editor.
D. Check that the following files exist in %systemroot%\system32 directory:
1. browser.dll
2. svchost.exe
Note: If any of these files are missing or corrupt, you will need to run Windows system file checker to replace the missing files.
To do this, click Start > Run, type â€@trade;sfc /scannowâ€@trade; [without the qoutes] and press ENTER. You will need the OS installation disc in this procedure.
