How can I understand the speed of a cd/dvd writer?

Question details:

I have cd-rw written on it RW52.32.52 what does it mean&I have dvd sata written on it 18X, what does it mean ?

Answer:

The amount of time taken to write a disc depends upon the speed of the recorder, the writing method used by the recorder and the amount of information required to be written.

Recording speed is measured the same as the reading speed of ordinary CD-ROM drives and players. At single speed (1x) a CD recorder writes 150 KB (153,600 bytes) of data (CD-ROM Mode 1) per second and at a multiple of that figure at each speed increment above 1x.

52x 32x 52x means that your CD-RW is able to write at 52x speed, rewrite at 32x speed and reda at 52x speed.

A DVD-RW with 18x on it means that it can write DVDs at 18x speed. At single speed (1x) a DVD recorder writes 1.32 MB (1385000 bytes) of data per second and a multiple of that figure at each speed increment above 1x.
