I have looked for a number of days, pouring through page after page of tech articles, how tos, faqs, and troubleshooting. I have gone to toshiba, microsoft, intel and realtek. I cannot identify my chipset, i run the utilities, and they freeze, or come back as un-supported platforms. i am not exactly sure when this happened, it roughly coincides with both a troublesome avg7.5-8.0 update, and xp sp3 update. any help, will be greatly appreciated.

This happens because you probably don;y have installed the drivers for sm bus controller and for the multimedia audio device. You need to install them.
